NEW BROWNFELLS – A senior joke that went too far at New Braunfels High School on Wednesday night ended with a mob of offenders detained by police and a major clean-up before the school could reopen.
New Braunfels ISD said many groups of students roamed the campus at night, leaving behind a “huge mess.”
Photos circulating among the students show toilet paper strewn from the ceiling, and NBHS senior Hank Bouthright told KSAT he saw people throwing meat and eggs on the walls.
“Most of the children were innocent and did not want to be involved. It was probably about 10 or 15, “said Bowright, who estimated that there were at least 100 children on campus for fun.
A screenshot of what appears to be an NBPD email was posted on social media and listed other damages such as locks broken from trophy boxes, stolen trophies, holes in walls, canals clogged with mashed potatoes, and flooded water fountains with tied handles.
An NBPD spokesman said he could not confirm or deny the information in the statement, as the investigation is ongoing.
The department said employees were called to the school at 10:20 p.m. for signals to people at the school.
They arrived to find “a large number of people committing crimes”, according to a statement from the NBPD.
Although the crowd dispersed, the NBPD said officers were able to detain a “relatively large number”, all of whom were identified and eventually released from the scene.
The department said the district was still assessing damage assessments and no charges had yet been filed.
Bowright was expecting a much more tame joke about seniors – balloons and toilet paper – “but she got out of control soon after she showed up.”
“They gave me time and told me there would be balloons. So I just showed up, “said Bowright. “I think most children did. I don’t think a lot of kids knew it was going to be so bad. “
Bowright said there were people throwing meat and eggs and “a lot of vandalism” and that “it came out after I found out things were going downhill.”
“I think when everyone is with their friends, they just think it’s funny to go crazy. And so people just got out of control, “Bowright said.
Initially, the school district postponed high school hours until 11 a.m. Thursday morning to ensure the campus was representative.
However, several staff were recruited from the area and staff members were able to finish before the normal start time of 8:50 am
