San Antonio – CJ McCollum scored 29 points and the Portland Trail Blazers defeated San Antonio Spurs 107-106 on Friday night, missing three shots on their last possession.
Norman Powell added 22 points to Portland and snapped a two-game skid.
In San Antonio, DeMar DeRozan scored 24 points, Dejounte Murray scored 13 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists.
Portland did not have Damian Lillard, who strained his right hamstring during Thursday’s practice.
At the Trail Blazers, seven players scored at least eight points, including reserves Carmelo Anthony, Anfernee Simons, and Enes Kanter for a total of 39 points.
Powell’s driving layup with 22.8 seconds remaining gave Portland a 107-106 lead. DeRozan missed the jumper from the wing with 9.2 seconds left, but Jakob Poeltl threw a rebound at Rudy Gay, who missed three pointers. Paultle won the rebound but missed the 17th footer over time.
DeRozan and San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich insisted that the foul should have been summoned during the last possession, but were unsuccessful.
The Spurs fell to 2-7 in April after blowing another lead in the last few minutes.
Portland closed the third quarter with a 24-10 run, scoring 16 points in the second half, winning the opening basket for the final period and drawing 85.
The run included technical fouls by DeRozan and Canter. The two had to be separated as Spurs guards tried to take ownership of Paint after fouling the Blazers center. Canter made both free throws, pulling the Blazers within 81-77, leaving 2:26 third.
The Trail Blazers went 97-95 and remained in Jusuf Nurkić’s layup at 4:43. DeRozan scored eight points in the last four and a half minutes, and Derrick White scored three points for a 104-101 lead with 2:03 remaining.
San Antonio had two turnovers and missed three shots in the last two minutes.
I often wish for Aldridge
Popovich said he was “really worried” when he first heard former Spurs forward LaMarcus Aldridge retired due to an arrhythmia. Popovich mentioned the cardiac arrhythmia that Aldridge experienced with the Spurs in March 2017.
“It was serious,” Popovich said. “It scared him and our hell. Obviously, it pops up again. So I was worried. He has a long and wonderful career. He will be financially well, and He has a lot of good memories, but your health tickles everything, so we want the best. “
Aldridge announced in the 15th season that he would retire shortly after dealing with the arrhythmia against the Los Angeles Lakers on April 10.
After spending the 51/2 season in San Antonio, Aldridge signed with Brooklyn on March 29, following the acquisition with Spurs.
