Mayfield, Browns approaching playoffs, Top Giants 20-6

Baker Mayfield led two 95-yard touchdown drives, and the Cleveland Browns approached the end of the 17-year playoff drought with a 20-6 victory over the New York Giants on Sunday night.

Mayfield was sharp all night, helping Browns (10-4) bounce back to Baltimore from a 47-42 defeat last Monday night. Cleveland’s quarterback has been great lately, and this was even more so as he finished 32, 27 at 297 yards with a scoring pass to Jarvis Laundry and Austin Hooper.

Nickchub made a one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, out of reach of the sluggish Giants, making Browns the first team of the season and using two 95-yard TD drives in the game. ..

With this victory, the Browns are close to winning the NFL’s longest drought, the first playoff spot since 2002. They also matched the highest total wins since the 1999 extended rebirth (10-6 in 2007).

Cleveland also hit the Giants’ (5-9) playoff hopes, which did not injure quarterback Daniel Jones. Colt McCoy, who started 21 games for the Browns in 2010-13, wasn’t very successful against his previous team.

Tight-end coach Freddie Kitchens was fired as head coach of Cleveland after last season and launched an attack with coordinator Jason Garrett after a positive coronavirus test. New York was aggressive early on, but scored only 6 points against the defense who had abandoned 80 points in the last two games.

McCoy was 19 out of 31 and the Giants were 221 yards. The Giants faced Dallas behind Washington and took first place in the NFC East.

New York’s opening drive stalled at 8 after McCoy’s throw to Evan Engram was incomplete in the end zone. The Giants brought out a field goal unit, but soon shifted to a fake. Holder Riley Dixon threw high and became incomplete in the center of Nickgates, pointing the ball down.

That might have worked too: Kicker Graham Gano was wide open in the end zone.

Browns also aimed for it with 4 downs on his first drive, but couldn’t even get on the scoreboard. Fourth and second from Giants 43, Mayfield’s pass was struck on the line by Dexter Lawrence.

New York opposed a four-down trick with his next possession as Gano led a 37-yard field goal 3-0.

Browns returned to the wide open Hooper behind the end zone at the beginning of the second quarter with a scoring drive capped by Mayfield’s two-yard pass.

New York had a chance to take the lead, moving from 5th to 4th and 1st, and Wayne Garman was packed without any profit. Cleveland took full advantage and Mayfield led the Browns on his first 95-yard drive. The drive was capped with a two-yard pass and reached the leaping laundry with 21 seconds remaining.

Laundry flashed “1” and “3” behind the end zone to pay tribute to his best friend and teammate Odell Beckham Jr. A former Giants wide receiver, he suffered an end-of-season knee injury in Cleveland earlier this year. Laundry, who joked with Isaac Yadom in the cornerback, was asked to provoke. As a result, Browns retreated 15 yards at an additional point, and Cleveland entered the locker room 13-3, with Cody Parky upright on the right side.

Browns placed it in a one-yard TD in Chub, leaving 12:53. Chub wiped out a 6-yard TD run with Jack Conklin’s clipping call, but returned to the end zone — and this was counted — a number to cap Cleveland’s second 95-yard TD drive. After playing.

Injured person

Browns: RG Chris Hubbard hurt his knee after starting Cleveland’s second offensive play in place of the injured Wyatt Teller. He didn’t come back. … DT Sheldon Richardson also didn’t come back after a neck injury in the third quarter.

Giants: Top cornerback James Bradley was in close contact with an individual who tested positive for the coronavirus and was put on the COVID-19 list on Thursday.

Browns: Next Sunday, I’ll be back in Meadowlands to face the 1-13 New York Jets, who defeated the Los Angeles Rams and won their first victory.

Giants: We’ll be playing Lamar Jackson and Ravens in Baltimore next Sunday.
