Martin Truex Jr. wins Darlington for the third time

Darlington, South Carolina – Martin Truex Jr. ran around the Darlington Raceway, sweeping both stages and leading the last 105 laps on Sunday.

Kyle Larson cut into the often large reeds of Truex in the last 30 laps, approaching the length of the two cars. However, the Joe Gibbs Racing driver kept him away for his third win of the season.

“Hopefully we can continue this,” Truex said.

The victory gave Truex some reward in Darlington, who led 196 laps last September, but finished in 22nd place after taking the lead behind Chase Elliott.

This time, Truex has confirmed that there is no problem running out of the front, aiming for the second victory on the “Too Tough To Tame” track. Often they have a 10 second lead in the field.

Truex won his 30th career win in NASCAR’s top series, leading 248 of the 293 laps. He is the only driver to win multiple wins in the first 12 races of the year.

He took control in the middle of the first of the three stages, moved forward on restart and settled down for a long ride ahead. Truex took the first stage, leading the last 21 laps, and on the last 36 laps, he won the second stage, about 14 seconds ahead of JGR teammate Kyle Busch.

Truex broke out when the race resumed on the final stage and was able to easily manage a few rounds of green flag pit stops to stay ahead.

Larson was second and third with Truex teammate Kyle Busch. William Byron was fourth and Denny Hamlin, who participated as the leader of NASCAR points, was fifth.

WHO’S HOT

Kyle Busch took a solid third place in Darlington, following his first victory of the season in Kansas last week. In the last seven races here, Bush was his sixth Top 10 finish. Bush’s only victory in Darlington came in 2008.

Who does not

Kurt Busch seemed to be heading for big things in Darlington when he gave the truck one of the most iconic moments. In 2003, he finished second alongside Ricky Kraben, losing 0.002 seconds behind. But Bush hasn’t been too close to Darlington’s victory in 22 races since then. His recent start ended in flames after he hit the inner wall and the liquid spewed out by his car burned. Chip Ganassi Racing Driver, who was unharmed in the accident, said:

Hey, isn’t it …?

There were a few NASCAR guests and fans who were allowed to roam the garage area for the first time since the coronavirus stopped stock car racing in March 2020. Kevin Harvick won the Darlington in May last year without fans. May of last year. There were about 8,000 fans on the stand. About twice that amount on Sunday, Darlington officials said they would open a grandstand to anyone who wants to come to the Southern 500 on September 5.

NASCAR heads to the Dover International Speedway for another triple-header weekend. There, the Camping World Track Series and the Xfinity Series will be held before the Cup Series race at Monster Miles. Kevin Harvick won the Cup Series event there in 2020. This is part of the season’s best nine wins.
