THE ANGELS – Several artists, including Bun B, Lupe Fiasco, 6LACK and Brittney Spencer, have recorded songs in honor of Juneteenth for Apple Music.

Performers from different genres have composed new tracks, while others have recorded versions for the second annual playlist “Juneteenth 2022: Freedom Songs,” which is released on the streaming platform on Friday. The playlist is released more than a week before the annual holiday, also known as Emancipation Day and Freedom Day, which commemorates the release of the last African American slaves on June 19.

“Music is the bond that unites our black experience in the United States and around the world,” said Ebro Darden, Apple Hip’s global head of hip-hop and R&B. “Being able to create original covers and music with artists of all musical genres is the perfect way to continue to celebrate the Black experience and continue our collective work for true freedom.”

The 16-song playlist also features reggae-dancehall singer Kranium, gospel singer Koryn Hawthorne and Latin rapper and singer Eladio Carrion.


Fiasco said he wanted to take a different approach when creating the original song “Galveston” for the playlist.

“I try to do things that establish excitement and usefulness so that people not only feel it, but can do something about it,” said the Grammy-winning rapper. “There’s only so much use you can have in music, but it all comes down to education and instruction.” from a different angle “.
