International migration will drive US population growth in 2022

The U.S. population will grow by 1.2 million this year, largely due to international migration, and the U.S. population now stands at 333.2 million, according to estimates released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau. I’m here.

From 2021 to 2022, the number of net international migrants, which is the number of people entering the United States minus the number leaving, will exceed 1 million. This represents a 168% increase from the previous year’s 376,029 international migrants, with residents increasing in every state. From abroad, according to Vintage’s 2022 population estimates.

Natural growth, the number of births minus deaths, added 245,080 to the total, marking the first year-on-year increase in births since 2007.

rebound rate

The US annual growth rate of 0.4% this year is the lowest since the founding of the country, recovering from 0.1% during the worst of the pandemic in 2020-2021.

Regionally, approximately 219,000 people died in the Northeast due to migration of domestic residents, mainly from New York, New Jersey, and Massachusetts, and a mortality rate that exceeded the number of births in Pennsylvania. The Midwest also lost about 49,000 residents. This is in part due to immigration from Illinois and more deaths than births in Ohio.

South gets over 1 million

The South gained 1.3 million residents, the most of any region, driven by population growth approaching 500,000 each in Texas and Florida. Texas, her second most populous state in the United States, has over 30 million people, making it the only state in this category after California.

However, California has lost over 113,000 residents and will have a population of just over 39 million in 2022. This was the largest annual decline behind New York’s loss of more than 180,000 residents. The population decline was attributed to the migration of more than 343,000 domestic residents from California, helping to bring the Western region’s population growth down to her 153,000 residents.

Without international migration and a large natural increase in births that outstripped mortality, the population of the western region would have declined as domestic residents also moved out of Oregon and Washington.

Puerto Rico lost 40,000 inhabitants, or 1.3% of the population, as people left and death rates exceeded birth rates. Its population is now 3.2 million.
