Beginning with a drizzle and ending with a downpour, the second-seeded American lost the opening set for Match 22-20. It was the first set to lose at the Tokyo Olympics. They dragged second 12-9, scoring 4 straight points and 7 of the next 8 points, scoring 21-17.

In the tiebreaker set, they pulled apart to defeat the unwinning Dutch pair of Sannekaiser and Madelein Meppelink 15-5.

With this victory, four US beach volleyball teams (two men’s and two women’s) set a 9-1 record at these Olympics. Jake Give and Triboon (2-0) will play the final round-robin match on Friday night. Sarah Sponcil and Kelly Claes (2-0) will face Brazil on Saturday morning. Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena are good at least one more match after qualifying round 2-1.

Emma Twigg of New Zealand won the gold medal in the women’s single sculls at the Tokyo Olympics. She bolted to the lead early on and ended with a surge over the last 500 meters.

Twigg, who finished fourth in the last two Olympics, easily shrugged Russia’s Hannah Praguezen, who won the silver medal at the Sea Forest Waterway.

Austria’s Magdalena Robnig won the bronze medal.
