Detroit Pistons won the first overall Oklahoma Cade Cunningham in the NBA Draft on Thursday in Brooklyn, but the biggest basketball news of the night was a deal to add former MVP Russell Westbrook with LeBron James. It’s in the Los Angeles Lakers, which is said to have agreed.
ESPN’s Adrian Voinarrowski reports that the Lakers have agreed to a deal with the Washington Wizards in Westbrook. Westbrook returns to his hometown of Los Angeles to play for his fourth team in four seasons.
Sources told ESPN that the Lakers would send Kyle Kuzma, Montrezl Harrell, Kentavious Caldwell Pope, and a 2021 draft topic in the proposed deal.

The Lakers lost to final Western Conference Champion Phoenix Suns in this year’s playoffs in the first round, mainly due to injuries to Davis and James, after winning the franchise’s 17-league title within the NBA Bubble in 2020. ..
The Lakers have also been criticized for lack of backcoat depth and will surely be dealt with by former UCLA star Westbrook.
Los Angeles had previously been reported interested in exchanging Kuzma for Sacramento Kings’ Buddy Hield, but once the Lakers complete the acquisition of Westbrook, the deal will be impossible.
For the NBA Draft, Cunningham was expected to go to Pistons first. This is followed by Jalen Green of the G League after the Houston Rocket, Evan Mobley of the USC Center, who was ranked 3rd by the Cleveland Cavaliers, Scottie Barnes of Florida State University, who was ranked 4th by the Toronto Raptors, and 5th. An overall pick by Orlando Magic, Gonzaga’s Jalen Suggs.
Surprisingly, Oklahoma City Thunder chose Australia’s Josh Guidi for his sixth pick.
Jalen Green will be interviewed Thursday before the 2021 NBA Draft
Cunningham was generally expected to go to the Pistons first. The Oklahoma 1-star was able to reach that goal Thursday night as a class headliner with top scorers, playmakers, and potentially elite defenders at the top. “I’ve been saying it for a long time,” Cunningham said. “We have one of the best classes for a long time, and we are really grateful for the fact that we are all pushing each other until we graduate from high school.”
Cunningham was widely expected to be the first name to be called in New York, but Pistons general manager Troy Weaver did not reveal plans earlier this week, saying the team would consider all scenarios, including trading.
In the end, Detroit stuck to the 19-year-old, who was mentioned as a potential top pick, before stepping into Oklahoma State University.
The 6’8, 220-pound point guard in Arlington, Texas, lived up to expectations with his size and fluid game and became the first team’s Associated Press All-American. With an average of 20.1 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists, he was able to hit from a range of 3 points, score dribbles and find teammates in traps.
Cunningham participated in the draft wearing a dark suit, shirt and tie with sparkling collars and cuffs. When the pick was announced, Cunningham sat on his lap, kissed his two-year-old daughter Riley, hugged his family, went on stage with NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, and wore a blue Pistons hat.
The first player to be ranked number one overall in Oklahoma’s history, Cunningham has won 20 games for two consecutive seasons and participated in a piston franchise that hasn’t finished more than .500 for five consecutive years. ..
Houston was in second place and grabbed teenager Jalen Green, who was preparing professionally to bypass college basketball to play in the G League. The 6’6 green showed off high-flying dunks, willingness to attack the rims, and a promising shooting touch, averaging 17.9 points when 46% shot 15 games.
Cunningham and Green are headlines in the class that include scorers, playmakers, and potentially elite defenders at the top. The group included Southern California freshman tycoon Evan Mobley, Gonzaga freshman point guard Jalen Suggs, and Florida State University freshman forward Scottie Barnes.
There is another player who took the same G League route as the green in the forward Jonathan Cumminga.
The draft is behind the traditional late June slot for the second consecutive year due to the COVID-19 pandemic that interrupted the 2019-20 season. The 2021-22 season will return to normal schedule and next year’s draft will be set again in June.
After Detroit first chose Cade Cunningham and Houston chose Jalen Green, the Cavaliers captured the 20-year-old Mobley, a two-way talent who is taking advantage of his potential.
The 7-foot Mobley joins young guards Darius Garland, Collin Sexton, and forward Isaac Okoro to lay the foundation for Cleveland. The Cavaliers have been in turmoil since LeBron James left as a free agent after the 2018 season.
There are more reasons for hope.
Shortly before the draft began, the Cavaliers agreed to buy veteran point guard Ricky Rubio from Minnesota, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press.
Cleveland sent a small forward train prince, cash and a second round pick to Timberwolves for Rubio in 2022, saying on condition of anonymity as the NBA must approve the swap. The person said.
The contract with Rubio came about when he was playing for the Spanish Olympic team in Tokyo. He will provide Cavs with a reliable backup at that time and provide Garland and Sexton mentors.
The Cavaliers felt like they were in a position to compete with the best third pick of their choice since they first won Andrew Wiggins overall in 2014 and traded to Minnesota in a deal with Kevin Love. ..
They heard a number of trade offers last season before picking and taking Mobley, who led the Trojan to Elite 8. He averaged 16.4 points and 8.7 rebounds in one college season and was named the best player, best freshman and best defensive player on the Pac-12.
Cleveland was disappointed in the 2021 season when he was suffering from injuries. The season ended 22-50, with Cavs losing 16 of the last 18 games. They have never chased the playoffs, but the team is back with satisfaction with the growth of the young players.
Now they have another in Mobley being compared to young Chris Bosh.
