Kia unveiled its new range of Niro hybrids and EV crossovers on Wednesday, as well as updates to the hugely popular Telluride SUV.
The two nameplates are important to the automaker in different ways. It has been a successful sale for Telluride, while the new Niro models have been squeezing consumers with high gas prices and growing interest in electric vehicles.
The Niro range includes all-electric, plug-in hybrids and traditional hybrids, all of which have been redesigned for the second generation of vehicles. They include updated design and additional safety and comfort features, including 10.25-inch control and information screens for available drivers.
“Kia’s electric vehicle drive continues with the launch of the new second-generation Niro, which offers more finesse, versatility, connectivity and technology than ever before,” Kia America COO of the Steven Center said in a statement. “Niro 2023 was designed for today’s needs and future sustainable mobility.”
The Niro Hybrid is expected to be combined with a combined 53 mpg and 588-mile driving range. However, the Niro EV remains below other competitors with an electric range of 253 kilometers, while other automakers offer vehicles with a range of more than 300 kilometers.
The redesigned models could boost Niro’s sales, from 20,200 units in 2021. That’s compared to Telluride’s 93,705 units last year.
The Telluride SUV has been a huge success for Kia since the mid-size SUV began production at a Georgia plant in early 2019. It has been among the most sought after vehicles in the U.S. auto industry because of its cheapness and features.
2023 Telluride expands these offerings, including additional safety and comfort features, a redesigned interior and an updated exterior. Kia also announced two new off-road-inspired models for 2023.
The updated Telluride is expected to go on sale at the end of the third quarter. The redesigned Niro models will go on sale this summer.
Kia said it will announce vehicle prices when they go on sale. Both were unveiled on Wednesday at the New York International Auto Show.
