K-9 featured in the Netflix series ‘Rescued by Ruby’ sacrificed

NORTH KINGSTOWN, RI – A Rhode Island dog whose inspiring story of going from shelter dog to K-9 lifeguard became the subject of a recent Netflix movie has been sacrificed.

State police said Sunday K-9 Ruby was shot dead on Friday following a “sudden, acute and intractable illness.” He was 11 years old.

Colonel Darnell Weaver, superintendent of state police, expressed his gratitude for K-9 Ruby’s years of service.

“K-9 Ruby has dedicated her life to serving the people of Rhode Island and making a positive impact on all the people she has interacted with,” she said in a statement. “She has become a symbol of hope for all the dogs in the shelter, showing the world. What a shelter dog can do when given the love and opportunity to shine.”

Ruby served in the Rhode Island State Police for 11 years and was managed by Corporal Daniel O’Neil, Weaver said.

Partly an Australian Shepherd and partly a Border Collie, Ruby was one of the first shelter dogs trained to serve in the Rhode Island State Police. He participated in numerous search and rescue missions and made many public appearances during his career.

Ruby gained notoriety in 2017 when she located a teenager who was seriously injured while hiking in the woods. The boy turned out to be the son of the animal shelter volunteer who had fought for her not to be shot.

“She was a total idiot,” shelter volunteer and dog trainer Patricia Inman told The Associated Press of Ruby, who had been returned by five families for being too agitated before O’Neil adopted the eight-month-old in 2011. .

Ruby won national recognition for the rescue – the US organization Humane Hero Dog named her the country’s “Search and Rescue Dog of the Year” – and her story became the 2022 Netflix movie “Rescued by Ruby”.

“He had a full, happy and wonderful life, not just as a soldier, but as part of a loving family,” Weaver said. “She worked to the end and never gave up doing what she loved most: making people smile.”

Ruby lived with O’Neil and her family and will be honored in private, police said.

“They gave him a chance and he was doing his best to give it back,” O’Neil said earlier this year. “You have this dog that has been abandoned and changed the lives of so many people.”

Despite her lauded search and rescue career, Ruby’s mischievous spirit was unstoppable: three years ago, she went out near a state park, appearing safe and sound after a 19-hour search. More recently, he returned from a getaway to the bathroom with a live skunk twisting – and spraying – in his jaws.

The pranks were part of what Ruby did, well, Ruby. Most of all, he was a good dog.

“If you show them love and compassion and give them a certain kind of stability, they will show their true colors,” O’Neil said.
