‘Juneteenth’s Grandmother’ Opal Lee Receives Honorary Doctorate from UNT

Denton, TX (KXAN) — opal leerecognized as “Juneteenth’s Grandmother” and celebrated with the graduates at the University of North Texas over the weekend.

96 years old from Marshall awarded an honorary doctorate Sunday as part of the UNT Spring Commencement Ceremony.

Lee Graduated from UNT In 1963, he received a master’s degree in education.

A retired educator, she was a key figure in the movement to make Juneteenth a national holiday.

In 2016, she started walking 2.5 miles in cities across the country. These miles represented the two-and-a-half years it took to bring the word of liberation to all the slaves.
