TDEM deploys state emergency response resources ahead of severe storms this week

AUSTIN (KXAN) — On Tuesday, Gov. Greg Abbott directed the Texas Department of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate state emergency response resources ahead of a severe storm. News release from TDEM.

“The Texas Emergency Management Council closely monitors weather conditions statewide, including flash flood threats and severe weather risks,” said Nim Kidd, Texas Emergency Management Officer. “As state and local responders work diligently to protect their communities from these weather threats, Texans are urged to stay alert to the weather to keep themselves, their loved ones, and property safe. I am being asked to pay.”

According to the National Weather Service, much of the state is at increased risk of heavy rains and flash floods this week. Additionally, severe storms are likely over the weekend, and Texans are being asked to monitor local forecasts.

At Abbott’s direction, TDEM has activated the following resources to support severe weather and flash flood response efforts statewide.

• Texas A&M Engineering Extension Services (Texas A&M Task Force 1): Four Swiftwater Boat Squads and two Boat Squad Managers, totaling over 30 responders, were deployed in Southeast Texas and Coastal Bend.

Texans are urged to follow the following flood preparedness and safety tips during inclement weather.

• Sign up for our community alert system.Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio issue an emergency alert.

• Purchase or renew flood insurance. Homeowners policy does not cover flooding. It usually takes up to 30 days for policies to take effect, so time your purchase well before a disaster strikes.Get flood coverage under National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).
• Keep important documents in a waterproof container. Create a password-protected digital copy.
• protect your property. Move your valuables to a higher level. Organize drains and gutters. Install the check valve. Consider a sump pump with a battery.
• Pay close attention to water in roads, streams, creeks, storm drains, and other areas. Do not attempt to cross a flowing stream or drive across a flooded road. Also, always observe the road barricades put up for protection. Remember, don’t turn around and drown.
