Chowdown champion Joey Joe’s Chestnut broke his record and scored his 14th win at Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest on Sunday. Michelle Resco won the women’s title.
The 37-year-old chestnut defeated 76 Franks and Bread in 10 minutes. That’s one more than last year’s men’s record, when the contest was run without fans because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Chestnut, Westfield, Indiana, said in an ESPN interview that he “feels good” after winning Sunday. “Even if I was uncomfortable, everyone cheered me up and pushed me, which made me feel better.”
Resco, Tucson, Arizona, defeated 30¾ dogs in 10 minutes and called her victory a “great mood.”
Miki Sudo, an active female champion and record holder, skipped this year because she hopes to have a baby in a few weeks with fast-eating eater Nick Wellie. He competed for the men’s title, but it wasn’t enough.
The annual Independence Day Frankfurt Fest usually takes place outside Nathan’s flagship store in Brooklyn’s Coney Island district. However, this year’s plan took place as coronavirus restrictions changed, and the event took place at the nearby minor league baseball stadium, Maimonides Park, with 5,000 spectators.
Last year, due to a pandemic, it was held indoors without a direct audience.
Chestnut of Westfield, Indiana, said he missed a fan last year.
“I was looking forward to this all year round,” he told ESPN in an interview before this year’s tournament.
