Jay Wright Villanova will retire as men’s basketball coach after an honorary stint

Jay Wright announced Wednesday that he is “proud and happy to give the neck to Villanova’s next coach,” ending his prestigious position at the head of the men’s junior program.

Wright plans to stay at the university in a different way, according to an email received by Fox News Digital. Kyle Neptune, Fordham’s current coach and first assistant under Wright, will take over as Wildcats head coach, the email said.

CBS Sports and The Athletic previously reported that Wright planned to retire.

The 60 -year -old Pennsylvania man is one of the most successful men’s football coaches in NCAA history.

He took over in 2001 after spending about seven seasons with Hofstra. He previously served as an assistant under the legendary Rollie Massimino from 1987 to 1992 and went with him to UNLV from 1992-1994 before taking on the Hofstra role.

At Villanova, Wright led the Wildcats to two NCAA tournaments, five Big East tournaments and made four appearances in the Final Four, including the 2022’s, when the Wildcats lost the title. last reign of the Kansas Jayhawks.

Wright was 642-282 overall and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021. He was a coaching assistant for Team USA in the summer when the Americans won gold in Tokyo.
