Ja Morant hits a buzzer bat and dunks over Poeltl’s 7 feet into 52-point play | Memphis Grizzlies

Ja Morant dunked a massive dunk past Jakob Poeltl’s seven-foot haul and scored a career-high 52 points, lifting the Memphis Grizzlies over the San Antonio Spurs 118-105 on Monday night.

The arena was still buzzing from Morant’s quick volley late in the second quarter when Steven Adams sent a long ball to Morant, who caught him in the air and unleashed buzzer-beaters from the left baseline for a 68-58 first-half lead. Morant also fired a three-pointer from near the logo with time running out, creating many highlights of an unforgettable night.

“It should be 50 [points],” said Morant when asked what impressed him the most, adding: “I thank my teammates, my coach. They believed in me and had all the confidence in the world that I would make the right game.”

Morant added 13 straight points during the fourth quarter to open the game, following up his career-best 46 points in Saturday’s win in Chicago by connecting 22 of 30 from the field. He hit all four three-point attempts as Memphis won its second in a row.

The Spurs defeat left coach Gregg Popovich one game behind to match Don Nelson for the most regular season wins by an NBA coach.

“She’s a beautiful player,” Popovich said of Morant. “What else can you say about him? It’s not just because he’s athletic. Everyone said, ‘He’s athletic.’ Someone said, ‘He’s weird,’ because he’s so fast. …but he made a decision. He knows what happens in court. So you combine the brain part of his playing with his athleticism and you get a special kid.”

Morant said Adams’ pass into the 19-foot basket in the final seconds of the first half was “something I may never be able to do again.” But he adds that if Adams is the quarterback for that type of throw, there’s a bit of wide-reaching ability in Morant’s ability.

“I’m just a red zone guy,” said Morant. “Faded route. Jump the ball.”

De’Anthony Melton was amazed at some things about teammate Morant’s performance, but Poeltl’s dunk over 7 feet drew most of his credit.

“Dunk is crazy,” said Melton. “The way he gets up, looks at him and dips.”
