Throughout New York’s theater district, you can literally see signs that Broadway is back. It is a decisive return for New York, not only as a form of art, but also as an economic driver.

Other than selling tickets, Broadway has contributed $ 14.7 billion to New York City’s economy and supports 96,900 local jobs, according to one estimate.

For the people of New York City, turning the lights back on meant something, but for people outside of New York, it meant something.

A year and a half later in the dark, not only were Broadway lights, performers and workers back, but so were the spectators. A pair of friends came from Illinois and Colorado.

Marie Jarrell told that watching the Broadway show again “would make me cry.”

The power of the moment is felt not only by the audience, but also by performers like Hamilton’s Taine Jasperson, who will resume on Tuesday night.

“It’s electrical. It’s a completely different thing,” he said. “I feel like we’re on fire.”

Echoes echoed by military couples Erica and Aaron Williams who experienced a reopening in Florida leaving their grandparents and children behind.

“With Broadway reopening and the city returning to normal, that hope was reestablished,” said Erica Williams. “And if we continue to have that hope, I think we’ll be fine.”
