Iran’s nuclear negotiations have been suspended and will resume in Vienna next week

Berlin – Diplomats negotiating in Vienna to revive Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers will be suspended after five days of talks with the government and will be reconvened next week. Said on Friday.

European Union officials, who chair the meeting, said some progress had been made, but further “convergence” was needed.

“We have identified future challenges. Now is the time to talk with the capital,” EU diplomat Enrique Mora told reporters. “Next week, we will resume here in Vienna.”

“We have a big challenge. Time is not unlimited. There is a clear sense of urgency,” he added. “But above all, it takes a certain degree of policy convergence to start negotiations.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) has been effective in sustaining life since the United States withdrew in 2018 under the “maximum pressure” campaign against then-President Donald Trump’s Tehran.

The remaining signatories of the nuclear agreement (Iran, Russia, China, France, Germany, United Kingdom) are meeting at the luxury hotel Palais Coburg, where the agreement was signed six years ago. The agreement severely restricted Iran’s uranium enrichment in exchange for lifting economic sanctions.

The US delegation, led by Biden’s special envoy to Iran, Robert Murray, stayed at a nearby hotel and was briefed by diplomats from other countries.

Mr Mora said Iran would need to fulfill its agreement-based promises and return the United States to “full compliance” in order to revive the agreement. In short, Washington needs to withdraw the devastating economic sanctions it imposes on Tehran.

Asked what was achieved this week, Mora said, “They negotiated with other delegations in the sense that a new Iranian delegation was formed.”

“We are also incorporating new policy sensitivities for the new Iranian delegation,” he said.

With the nuclear deal, Iran restricted uranium enrichment in exchange for lifting economic sanctions. Since the collapse of the agreement, Iran is now concentrating small amounts of uranium to a purity of up to 60%. This is a short step from 90% of the weapons grade level. Iran has also spun an advanced centrifuge banned by the Accord, whose uranium stockpile is now well beyond the limits of the Accord.

On Wednesday, the International Atomic Energy Agency, which oversees the Islamic Republican nuclear program, will begin measures to concentrate uranium at up to 20% purity at Iran’s underground nuclear facility in Fold, which aims to stop all enrichment. He said he did.

Iran claims that its atomic program is peaceful, but US intelligence and international inspectors say Iran had an organized nuclear weapons program until 2003.

IAEA inspectors cannot fully monitor Iran’s programs because Tehran restricts access to the site.

An Iranian delegation appointed by Iran’s new president, Ebrahim Raisi, called for the United States to unfreeze $ 10 billion in assets this week as the first gesture of goodwill.
