Zurich insurance Great place to work digitally-large organizations He met Alastair Robertson, responsible for continuous improvement and automation, and talked about how the company got there and plans for the next year.

Computing: Please tell us about Zurich insurance.

Alastair Robertson: Zurich, UK, offers a variety of non-life and life insurance products to individual and corporate customers. We offer personal, commercial and municipal insurance through many distribution channels and offer a variety of protection policies available through online, retail market financial advisors and corporate market employee benefit consultants. Zurich employs approximately 4,500 people in the United Kingdom and is headquartered in Birmingham, Fernbara, Glasgow, London, Swindon and Whiteley.

CTG: How is it different from other people?

AR: We are an insurance company that uses technology for the benefit of our customers and staff. That’s what our customers expect. I think what sets Zurich apart from other companies is the pace and scale of how we have advanced our thinking in a market that is often considered calm, slow and stuffy.

We are a huge global insurance company, and we were able to make a difference and work agilely in a very short period of time. We have made technological and social changes, impacted our business and others, and used them to create opportunities. This includes investing in existing employees and subsequent new job and career choices. We are committed to helping people through these changes. Our internal automation academy is one example, offering everyone across the company the opportunity to learn new skills in working with technology. Second, this approach allows you to incorporate new expertise into many features.

CTG: What is the most proud company’s performance in the last 12 months?

AR: Of course, I am very proud to be selected as the finalist for this wonderful award. I think this reflects the diligence and positive culture of business. At the same time, we are proud of the evolution of the Automation Academy. This makes it easier to build and implement highly needed automation solutions that help us serve our customers better.

Since its launch, the pipeline has more processes, automating hundreds of processes. Instead of sending paper or mail, they helped speed up payments to customers, collate policy documents, and quickly communicate about important changes. Most importantly, we took our staff and culture on a journey. It shows that automation is not something to be afraid of, but one that can provide an opportunity for everyone. We have changed the career path of many and trained people with new skills that they would normally “buy” in the past. We want a sustainable and efficient organization that can serve our customers perfectly and be an exciting place to work for everyone.

CTG: What are you working on this year?

AR: This year, we will focus on further expanding the concept of this academy and enhancing the capabilities of our business to take advantage of a variety of new tools, not just automation. By retraining and re-skilling our staff, who know our customers better than anyone else, we can get the most out of both our technical insurance knowledge and the latest state-of-the-art technology. This enables strong partnerships and benefits for our customers. We also work with governments and shadow government agencies in many ways, including ethical AI and responsible automation.

CTG: Why are events like the Digital Technology Leader Awards so important to the IT industry?

AR: Events like this are a great way to showcase the existing shifts we are currently experiencing and working on. While automation is too focused on being a threat to people’s work and life, in reality it is creating new opportunities and skills for those who want to travel.

Digital Technology Leaders Awards will be held next week. Book your place now.
