Indian Francona resigns due to physical health problems

Cleveland – Indians manager Terry Francona will resign to address protracted health issues for the rest of the season.

Francona, 62, wore boots on her right foot all year round after undergoing toe surgery for a staphylococcal infection in February. He is also working on hip problems that require surgery.

Francona, two-time World Series Champion Manager at the Boston Red Sox, has been absent for the second year in a row for good health. He managed only 14 games in 2020 due to a serious gastrointestinal problem that landed at the Cleveland Clinic for several weeks.

During hospitalization, Francona had problems with blood clotting and was admitted to the intensive care unit.

Bench coach Demar Rocher will take over tentatively for the rest of the season while Francona focuses on his health. Third base coach Mike Sarbaugh takes the seat of Hale, and assistant coach Kyle Hudson comes in third.

First base coach and former Indians All-Star catcher Sandy Alomar replaced Francona a year ago.

Francona, one of the most popular baseball managers, is celebrating his ninth season in Cleveland. He holds a record of victory each year, only five wins from Hall of Fame Lou Boudreau (728), who has won the most wins in team history.

Francona led the Indians to the World Series in 2016 when the club lost to the Chicago Cubs in seven games. Cleveland hasn’t won the title since 1948 — the current longest drought in baseball.

News about Francona remains bumpy last week for Indians who have been hit by injuries that have hurt their hopes for the playoffs. Cleveland is behind the Chicago White Sox of AL Central by 8 1/2 games.

On Thursday, the Indians replaced second baseman Caesar Hernandez with the White Sox. This shows that they focused on improving the roster for the future.

Earlier this week, Francona missed two games due to a nasty head cold he picked up on a recent road trip. The Indians also recently announced that they would change their name to Guardian in 2022. This is a decision that has offended many fans.

Following the announcement, Francona passionately talked about his love for the organization. His father, Tito, played for the Indians from 1959 to 1964.
