Apple may have found out who will implement the Apple Glasses AR headset. Also, longtime iPhone chip partner Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. TSMC Reportedly Introduced to manufacture wafer thin OLED displays that are smaller than LCD screens and require less power.
These displays don’t seem to be the same as the 8K screens advertised in future Apple VR headsets. Instead, they are aimed at AR-focused projects that are still under development.
This is due to information reported by Nikkei Asia in direct contact with sources familiar with Apple’s projects.
What’s so special about Apple Glass OLED displays?
You won’t notice much of a difference between these displays and the average LCD screen you see on your smartphone or TV. The main difference between the rumored micro OLEDs is not the image quality, but the design and size.
The screen is not a single sheet, but a collection of thin strips containing the necessary components such as polarizers and color filters (which control the brightness and color of the light from the screen). Due to the TSMC design, some of these components, such as the glass substrate on which the display is usually built, are no longer needed and can be removed.
Not only does this make the Apple Glass headset look better, but it also reduces the number of components and reduces the power consumption of the TSMC display. This allows Apple devices to last longer on a single charge. Apple designers can also save even more on the weight and size of their glasses by using a smaller battery.
Who is TSMC?
TSMC is primarily known as a microchip maker. Apple has previously worked with the company, and TSMC is a supplier of iPhone processors around the world. The product is also among other well-known high-tech brands such as Nvidia’s 1070 GPU.
OLED displays may look like a radically different industry to TSMC, but their semiconductor expertise has the potential to significantly support it in this new area. If Apple chooses the TSMC design for its flagship Apple Glass headpiece, it could be something special.
