Los Angeles – Authorities said a large American flag and some small flags were stolen from a veterans’ cemetery in Southern California over the Memorial Day weekend.

Les Melnick, a spokesman for the Department of Veterans Affairs’ National Cemetery Administration, said the Los Angeles National Cemetery garrison flag was reported to have been stolen late Sunday and early Monday.

The Cemetery Gates were closed at that time, Melnyk said.

Veterans police are investigating the theft of a 25-foot x 30-foot (7.6-meter x 9.1-meter) flag, Melnik said.

The crime “does not undermine the honor and respect for the service of men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country on this anniversary,” Melnik said.

Rebecca Adams, a volunteer at the Los Angeles National Cemetery Assistance Foundation, said it would be difficult to remove the flag, which is usually handled by three people.

“It’s very sad and shocking to see this happen on Memorial Day,” Adams said.

The cemetery dates back to the late 19th century and is run by the Veterans Affairs Department.
