Billy Porters says ‘I have to sell my house’ due to the writes ongoing strikes: ‘you’ve already starved me out’

Billy Porter said the ongoing writers and actors strikes have forced him to make difficult financial decisions.

‘I have to sell my house,’ the Pose star, 53, revealed to the Evening Standard. ‘I don’t know when we’re gonna go back [to work].’

Billy, who is in England promoting his music career, explained: ‘The life of an artist, until you make f**k-you money, which I haven’t made yet, is still check-to-check.’

He purchased a home in Long Island in late 2020 with his estranged husband Adam Smith, who he split from in July.

Billy told Condé Nast Traveller in 2021 that it sits on one-acre of land and is the first home he’s ever owned.

Billy also revealed to Evening Standard that two of his upcoming projects were axed as Hollywood remains at a standstill.

‘I was supposed to be in a new movie, and on a new television show starting in September. None of that is happening,’ the Emmy-winner claimed.

Billy did not mention either project by name, but IMDB has him listed to star in the upcoming James Baldwin biopic.

‘So to the person who said ‘we’re going to starve them out until they have to sell their apartments,’ you’ve already starved me out.’

That final flourish may have been in reference to an article by Deadline, in which an unnamed Hollywood executive said: ‘The endgame is to allow things to drag on until union members start losing their apartments and losing their houses.’

Another insider called the strategy, ‘a cruel but necessary evil.’

Representatives for the writers met with studio executives last week to talk, but nothing was settled on.

The economic impact is being felt especially hard in California, where a good portion of the 160,000 SAG-AFTRA members live.

The film and television industry accounts for more than 700,000 jobs and some $70 billion a year in wages, according to the California Film Commission.

Georgia, which has a strong film production industry, has also been hurt by the strike.

The movie businesses in the South produces at least $3.5 billion in annual wages and more than 46,000 jobs, according to CBS News.

US News and World Report found the median salary for an actor was $46,960 in 2021.

A-list stars including George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Matt Damon, Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts have contributed to an emergency fund which has raised more than $15 million for out of work actors.

No such emergency fund has been announced for the 11,000 striking writers.

One of the biggest blocks to an agreement are payments and residuals for projects viewed through streaming services.

‘There’s no contract for it…And they don’t have to be transparent with the numbers — it’s not Nielsen ratings anymore,’ Porter said.

He continued: ‘To hear (Disney CEO)  Bob Iger say that our demands for a living wage are unrealistic? While he makes $78,000 a day? Child, we got to get our money!’
