Mexico’s foreign affairs secretary said he had sent a diplomatic note to the US government expressing the Mexican government’s concerns over Texas’ deployment of a floating barrier on the Rio Grande River.

Alicia Barcena said the floating barrier Texas has installed along the Rio Grande may have violated the 1944 and 1970 Boundary and Water Conventions. He also said the Mexican government will send an inspection team to see if the floating barrier extends into the river on the Mexican side.

She said that if the barrier blocks the flow of water, it violates the treaty that says the river must not be blocked.

The floating barrier is part of Governor Greg Abbott (R, Texas)’s multi-billion dollar effort to secure the southern border.

“We patrol the border at the border. What we can do with these buoys is stop people from even reaching the border,” Abbott said. “This strategy actively prevents illegal crossings between ports of entry by making it more difficult to reach the Texas side of the southern border across the Rio Grande.”

Other initiatives the governor has taken include busing immigrants to other states and allowing the National Guard to make state arrests.

When the floating barrier plan was first announced, immigration advocates expressed concern about people drowning while crossing the river, and environmental activists expressed concern about the impact the barrier would have on the river itself.

Deployment of the buoys to the river began in early July, and when fully installed, the webbing connected to the upstream portion of the system will cover approximately 1,000 feet of the midstream Rio Grande, within which anchors will be placed. increase. It hit the riverbed.

Most seawall work is concentrated along the river in Eagle Pass, which has a higher-than-average number of illegal crossings, according to the Texas Department of Safety.

Another strategy used by Eagle Pass is to install barbed wire on some of the low-lying islands in the river, a strategy that Barcelona also protests.
