Harden commits to the US Olympic men’s team in Tokyo

USA Basketball’s Olympic men’s roster is nearing full, with a team of 12 claiming eight spots.

Brooklyn’s James Harden told the national team that he promised to play against the US men’s national team at the Tokyo Olympics next month, a person familiar with the decision said. Bam Adebayo of Miami has also informed USA Basketball of their intention to play for the team at the Tokyo Olympics.

Adebayo’s decision was first reported by ESPN, who confirmed it to the Associated Press on Monday. Harden’s decision was first reported by Athletic and confirmed by AP on condition of anonymity, as neither Nets star nor USA Basketball have publicly announced the move.

So far, all eight commitments have been publicly confirmed by a knowledgeable person or player. Adebayo, Harden, Kevin Durant in Brooklyn, Draymond Green in Golden State, Bradley Beal in Washington, Jayson Tatum in Boston, Devin Booker in Phoenix, Damian Lillard in Portland.

However, one of the last spots doesn’t go to Stephen Curry in the Golden State. Those who knew the situation said Curry declined the invitation to join the team because of his off-season commitment.

Harden’s status is considered somewhat tentative given that he slowed down in the NBA Playoffs by describing it as a Grade 2 hamstring train. His commitment is conditional on his feet continuing to heal, and knowledgeable people will have no additional setbacks in the coming weeks.

Durant scored 48 points, the NBA record for Round 7, when Brooklyn lost to Milwaukee on Saturday in the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. If he plays in Tokyo, Durant will win three consecutive gold medals. And it looks like the key to replacing Carmelo Anthony as USA Basketball’s leading Olympic scorer. Anthony scored 336 points in the United States in the Olympic games. Durant has scored 311 points.

Brooklyn General Manager Sean Marks said on Monday, “Our team understands what’s best for them, what’s best for their bodies, and what their ultimate goal is. I think I’ve gained enough experience. ” “It’s very difficult to refuse to play for your country, have the opportunity to go there, make a summer fuss and win the Olympic gold medal.”

Marks said he had no problems if Durant chose to play. This was Durrants’ first NBA season after missing a year to recover from Achilles’ injury.

“As I said before, I think it’s very difficult for Kevin to refuse to play for your country,” Marks said. “I think Kevin knows this because having that opportunity is unique. Kevin will be with many close friends if he feels right and is working. I know it’s a great opportunity to go out and have a very unique experience. “

Paul George of the Los Angeles Clippers, and Kawhi Leonard, if healthy, are the players who have suggested to USA Basketball that they want to play for the Olympic team in recent weeks, but the final decision.

It is also believed that Chris Paul of Phoenix Guard, who was a member of the US team who won the Olympic gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and the 2012 London Olympics, is also interested.
