PARIS – Formula One great Lewis Hamilton said “archaic minds” have to change after retired champion Nelson Piquet used a racial insult against him.
Hamilton’s comments came after the F1 and FIA condemned racist language.
“It simply came to our notice then. These archaic mindsets must change and have no place in our sport. I’ve been surrounded by these attitudes and have been aiming for my whole life, ”Hamilton wrote Tuesday.“ There was plenty of time to learn. It’s time to dump her and move on. “
The only black F1 driver, Hamilton is a seven-time world champion.
He also wrote in Portuguese, “Let’s focus on changing the mentality” and responded to another tweet that used an insult to Piquet, a 69-year-old Brazilian who has won three F1 titles.
Piquet was discussing an accident between Hamilton and Max Verstappen during last year’s British Grand Prix when Piquet referred to Hamilton’s skin color with a discriminatory term in November on a YouTube podcast called Enerto.
“Discriminatory or racist language is unacceptable in any form and has no part in society. Lewis is an incredible ambassador for our sport and deserves respect, “he told F1 in a statement.” His tireless efforts to increase diversity and inclusion are a lesson for many and something we are committed to in F1. “
Hamilton has campaigned tirelessly to fight racism and has been outspoken about human rights abuses in the countries where F1 runs.
The governing body of motoring FIA also defended Hamilton.
“The FIA strongly condemns any racist or discriminatory language and behavior, which has no place in sport or in society at large,” the FIA said. “We express our solidarity @LewisHamilton and fully support their commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion in motor sport ”.
Hamilton’s Mercedes team, known as Silver Arrows, went from silver to a completely black car in 2020 to support Hamilton’s efforts to combat racism. Hamilton and most of the riders got on their knees before the races in 2020 and 2021 as an anti-racism gesture. Hamilton also created the Hamilton Commission to improve the diversity of F1.
“We condemn in the strongest terms any use of racist or discriminatory language of any kind. Lewis has led our sport’s efforts to combat racism, and is a true champion of diversity on and off the track, ”Mercedes said on Twitter.“ Together, we share a vision for a diverse and inclusive motor sport, and this incident highlights the fundamental importance. to continue fighting for a better future. “
Two years ago, Hamilton criticized the “ignorant and uneducated” comments of former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone. Hamilton was impressed by Ecclestone’s statement during an interview with CNN that “in many cases, blacks are more racist” than whites.
Piquet won F1 three times in the 1980s and 23 races. His daughter Kelly Piquet is Verstappen’s girlfriend.
The British GP is this weekend.
