Gut Behrami and Schifflin take the lead in World Cup ski openers

Soelden – SÖLara Gut-Behrami outperformed Mikaela Shiffrin by a 1/200 second in the Giant Slalom of the Women’s World Cup, which kicked off on Saturday.

Austrian skier Stephanie Bruner was the fastest of the rest of the field, but more than a third behind.

Defending champion Petra Vlhovah sat behind 0.81 in 6th place and Marta Bassino skied out.

The Italian, who won the race a year ago and dominated the field with four wins last season, lost control just outside the ski in the middle of the run when he was already 0.57 behind the then leader Sifflin. I did.

GS World Champion Gut Behrami performed aggressively on the Rettenbach glacier in perfect sunny conditions. The Swiss star led Schifflin’s time to a few hundredths.

Gut-Behrami had a quick start and was .09 ahead on the first split, but lost some of his lead to Schifflin at each of the following checkpoints.

The three American overall champions started the race with a clean run.

Schifflin shrugged a bit after the finish, but her time easily held up when other pre-race favorites fell.

“It was a really very clean run. Skiing was really nice,” said Schifflin. “Looking at Lara, she’s also very precise and may be a little more active, like a little extra.”

New Zealand’s Alice Robinson, who won the opening round in 2019, lost the lead at .90. Federica Brignone, the 2020 World Cup overall champion, was 1.51 seconds behind. And France’s outstanding Tessa Worley had 1.65 to make up for the second leg.

While some big names are struggling, others have had the chance to finish the opening run in the top 10.

Slalom World Champion Katharina Liensberger finished 4th, Canadian genius Valerie Grenier 5th, and Slovenian Meta Hrovat 9th within a second of Gut Behrami’s lead.

9,000 spectators participated in the race in the midst of strict anti-coronavirus measures.

A minute of silence before the race was dedicated to long-time FIS president Jean Franco Kasper, who died in July, just weeks after Johann Elias was elected successor.
