Governor Abbott asks Texas restaurants and retailers to remove all Russian products

“Texas is near Ukraine,” the governor said Saturday afternoon.

AUSTIN, Texas – As Russia’s military operation in Ukraine continues, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has asked the Texas Restaurant Association, the Texas Package Shopping Association and all Texas retailers to voluntarily remove all Russian products from their shelves.

“Texas is close to Ukraine,” the governor said on Twitter on Saturday afternoon.

The move comes as several bars in the country have announced they will not offer Russian vodka to show support for Ukraine. At least one Austin bar, Barton Springs Saloon, said it took KVUE a step further and poured Russian vodka.

But the move can be more symbolic than anything else, especially if the inventory has already been purchased.

Paul Iseli, deputy dean of Grand Valley State University and professor of economics, told the KVUE sister station WZZM that Russian vodka is sold for about $ 41 million a year.

“Compared to Russia’s $ 1.7 trillion economy, it’s really small, but if we reduce the number of units sold for a company that could be very large, it will affect the profitability of those companies and their willingness to support them,” he said. [the conflict]”he said.

Iseli said it was unlikely that harming companies would affect Russian President Vladimir Putin or the country’s economy.

Sanctions have a greater impact. The current situation makes it difficult for Russia to move around the world and spend money.

However, Isely said any small boycott could help show solidarity.

“Yes, there is a large group of people who support it by showing it and doing things like that,” he said.

Iseli expects the current sanctions to drag Russia into recession in the next three months.

The US will see a 1-2% increase in inflation. When it comes to fuel, prices will rise a little faster and costs for businesses will rise.
