As the US Senate began its vote-a-rama budget celebration Saturday night, one senator took a few moments to show Rep. Jackie Walorski and members of her staff, who died in a car accident this week.
“Mr. President, I rise today to honor the lives of four Hoosiers who were tragically lost in a car accident this week,” said Sen. Todd Young, R-IN, on the Senate floor.
He then named Walorski, 58, communications director Emma Thomson, 28, and police officer Zachary Potts, 27, who died in a head-on collision Wednesday in Elkhart County, Indiana. . Edith Schmucker, 56, the sole occupant of the other vehicle, was also killed in the collision.
“We are saddened by all of them and we pray for their families and friends,” Young said. “Like everyone here and back home in Indiana, I’m very hurt.”

“Obviously, this is a very difficult time for us who know one or more of these Hoosiers, it’s a difficult time for their families and their friends and all of us,” he said.
“I think one thing that’s been really hard on everyone is losing two young members of the council, if you know Zach or Emma well, you know who they are. The kind of hardworking, smart, committed young people who come to work as a council employee. They give a lot of their time, their talents, and other opportunities to serve their their country.”

“We should celebrate their work as we grieve their loss. It’s a reminder, I think, for all of us to appreciate how many council workers do their best.” a lot more than the public realizes,” Young continued.
Young also recognized his colleague, who he said had “infectious” confidence and “can light up a room.”
“Jackie knew she was here. Jackie knew this was her calling,” he said. “He doesn’t need people to tell him who he is but he deserves the job because he has things to accomplish.”

“His confidence is infectious. Everyone knows it. Everyone respects him. People want to be around him and me too,” Young added. “Jackie has many other wonderful qualities.”
He continued: “He was always full of energy. He was electric. He could light up any room.
Young described Walorski as “larger than life” who “inspired and inspired people.”

“It is not enough to say that Jackie’s last breath was spent in service, in service to his constituents, to his God, to the great state of Indiana and to his country,” he concluded.
Walorski’s funeral will be held on August 11 at 11 am ET at Granger Community Church in Granger, Indiana.
