Even if you turn off “Location History”, Google often saves your exact location.
Here’s how to put one together for use with your bookmarks and keep your location as private as possible.
But there is no panacea, because connecting to the Internet on any device indicates a geographically mapped IP address.
Smartphones also connect to mobile towers, so your carrier knows your overall location at all times.
Disable tracking on any device
Launch your browser and go to myactivity.google.com. You will need to sign in to Google.
In the drop-down menu at the top left, go to ‘Activity Controls’. Turn off “Network and Application Activities” and “Location History”.
This should prevent specific placemarks from being stored in your Google Account.
Google warns you that some of its services will not work properly when these settings are turned off.
In particular, no Google Assistant, Digital Gateway, and Google Home Smart Speaker will be particularly useful.
If you use Google Maps, adjust your location setting to the “While in Use” app. This will prevent the app from accessing your location when it is not active.
Go to Settings Location Privacy and select Google Maps for adjustment.
In your Safari web browser, consider using a search engine other than Google.
In the Safari search engine settings, you can find other options like Bing or DuckDuckGo.
You can turn off your location while browsing Settings Settings Location Services Go to Safari Websites and select “Never”.
This will not prevent advertisers from knowing your rough location based on the IP address of any website.
You can turn off location services on your device almost completely from the Settings location services.
Both Google Maps and Apple Maps will still work, but they don’t know where you are on the map and can’t give you directions.
Emergency services can still find you if needed.
Under the main settings icon, click ‘Security and location’. Scroll down to the ‘Privacy’ heading. Click ‘Location’. You can turn it off for the entire device.
Use ‘Application-level permissions’ to disable access to various applications.
Unlike iPhone, there are no “While in Use” settings.
You can’t turn off Google Play if your location is turned on to other apps if you turn it off.
Sign in as a ‘guest’ by swiping up and down your Android device and tapping the cursor facing down, then back to the trunk icon.
Please note which services you start with, such as Chrome. You can also change search engines in Chrome.
Delete past location tracking on any device
On myactivity.google.com, search for any entry with the location pin icon next to “details”.
Clicking on it sometimes brings up a link that says “From your current location”.
Clicking on it will open Google Maps, which will show you where you are at the moment.
You can delete it from this pop-up with the three dots accumulated in the navigation icon and then “Delete”.
Some items will be collected in unexpected places, such as theme names, google.com, Search, or Maps.
You must delete items by item. You may delete all items by date range or by service, but you will eventually remove more than one placeholder.
