Alphabet-owned Google announced on Thursday that the acquisition of Fitbit, first announced in November 2019, has finally been completed.
The deal was the subject of a month-long survey of whether Google’s market position in the online advertising business could be further enhanced when personalizing ads using Fitbit data.
Fitbit could help increase Google’s presence in the wearable market. Google doesn’t build its own smartwatch or fitness tracker, but it does provide software that other companies can use to build smartwatches. However, they don’t provide much detail about training, sleep, and other metrics that are important to people who want to improve their health.
“This deal has always been about devices, not data, and it was clear from the beginning that it would protect the privacy of Fitbit users,” said Rick Osterlow, senior vice president of devices and services at Google, in a statement. ..
“We have a series of binding commitments to ensure that Fitbit user health and wellness data is not used in Google Ads and that this data is separated from other Google Ads data, including consumer privacy. Worked with global regulators on an approach to protecting their expectations, “he added.
According to the company, Fitbit users can still choose to connect to third-party services, allowing a variety of health and wellness apps to connect to their Fitbit account.
