(Reuters) -American Xander Schauffele will return to the Zozo Championship in Japan about two and a half months after winning the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics this week. The 27-year-old is a PGA Tour event.

The tournament will return to Japan at Accordia Golf Narano Country Club on Thursday after last year’s edition was moved to California due to COVID-19 restrictions.

The $ 9.95 million event will feature Asia’s first Masters Champion Hideki Matsuyama and two major winners Collin Morikawa and Schauffele.

Schauffele, whose grandparents live in Japan, said winning the Zozo Championship would be a great honor for his family.

“I’m very excited,” Schauffele, who won the Ryder Cup in the United States last month, said Wednesday.

“Winning here would be really cool. Winning twice in Japan is really special, especially since I don’t live in Japan.

“I think it would be a great honor for my family to do that. I will do my best this week.”

Morikawa, an American whose father is of Japanese descent, said he was looking forward to playing in front of an energetic crowd of 5,000 spectators every day.

“These are some of the best fans,” Morikawa said. “I remember the first tee being shot here two years ago when I had a fan on the stool and lined up at a depth of five or six.

“They help you walk into the tee box and hit every tee shot, good or bad.

“They bring so much energy. I said after returning from COVID, it’s really good to see people here again.”
