(Reuters) – World No. 2 Collin Morikawa and four-time major winner Rory McIlroy will begin the 2022 DP World Tour season at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in January.

The 24-year-old Morikawa, who won the British Open this year, finished the season as the number one European Tour and ended the memorable year with a victory at the DP World Tour Championship on Sunday.

Earlier this month, the European Tour announced that it would be renamed DP World Tour from next year in partnership with a logistics company based in the United Arab Emirates.

The Abu Dhabi Championship has been held at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club for 16 consecutive years, but next year it will move to Yasu Links Abu Dhabi and will be held from January 20th to 23rd.

“I can’t wait to go back to the Middle East and play the Abu Dhabi Championship for the first time,” Morikawa told the European Tour website.

“I’ve heard great things about this event and it attracts world-class fields every year, but I know this year will be a special year for YasLinks for the first time.”

McIlroy, who finished the 2021 campaign in 6th place in the DP World Tour Championship, will continue to aim for his first victory in Abu Dhabi, who won second place four times.

“I have a lot of happy memories of the Abu Dhabi Championship and I look forward to the start of this year again with this wonderful tournament,” McIlroy said.

“I’ve been to this event several times in the past. I hope I have a chance to get the trophy for the first time on Sunday.”
