Amputee, 56, found dead in floating barrel in South Carolina lake: man, 25, charged

The body of a 56-year-old amputee who went missing more than two weeks ago was found in a floating barrel in a lake in South Carolina.

Law enforcement in rural Cherokee County made the disturbing discovery at about 1:45 p.m.

Police officers reportedly arrived at the scene and found a 42-gallon tank floating near the shore, and when they opened the tank they discovered the body of Jeffrey Sutphin. A coroner’s analysis of the body confirmed that it had been held captive for “several days.”

Authorities said they had questioned officials after identifying the bodies, including Sutfin, a Cherokee resident with a missing right leg and a prosthetic leg, who was murdered somewhere in neighboring Spartanburg County. He said he knew it was likely.

Sutfin was last seen on June 15, reportedly in Chesney, the setting for both counties. Police have since arrested one person following the tragic discovery and charged Eric Sean Fetzer, 25, with the destruction, desecration or removal of the body.

“Investigators discovered a barrel near the shore that opened to reveal a human remains,” Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler said in a news release on Friday, adding that investigators would be expected within days. He said more arrests were expected.

“Since the discovery, investigators were able to confirm that the death occurred in Spartanburg County late Thursday,” she added.
