Garland ISD school security system in place after Uvalde

The Garland Independent School District Supervisor took the WFAA to safety, showing what happened after a heart attack in Uvalde.

GARLAND, Texas – For the first time, WFAA is looking at one of the largest security systems in the school district.

The Garland Independent School District Supervisor took the WFAA to safety, showing what happened after a heart attack in Uvalde.

“Every stone must always be opened, we never rest,” said Dr. Ricardo Lopez, Garland ISD Supervisor.

Lopez’s heart sank after what happened in Uvalde.

“It’s in our thoughts and minds 24/7,” he said.

The 19 students and two teachers killed at Robb Elementary School come to mind Lopez, who thinks about the safety and security of students in his area.

Starting with a continuous announcement: “What you hear, there are alarms when the door is left open. We are warned and immediately approach our cameras, “Lopez said.

Officers constantly monitor the complex system from the corridors to the school doors.

“When you walk in the front door, you’ll see you’re locked,” Ricardo said.

It is closed and no one can enter the safe lobby.

“You just can’t get in,” Lopez said.

The school district received a $ 73 million grant to make changes to all the buildings.

With 53,000 students and 84 buildings, Lopez said, “Instead of going through metal detectors, kids walk around and security dogs go through on-site inspections.”

Security personnel go from school to school and conduct random searches at least three or four times a day.

“They’re going to take all the kids out and check their backs with the dogs,” Lopez said.

Despite the end of the school year, Lopez asks students to report anything suspicious in their applications at https://www.anonymousalerts.com/garlandisd/ or on their website.

“Let us know what you know. We are in it for the children, we protect our teachers. We want schools to be safe for all our students, ”Lopez said.
