Arlington, Texas – All-Star Slugger Adolis Garcia linked the Rangers single-season rookie record with his 30th homer. Leads the Houston Astros 8-1 on Tuesday night.
Rangers starter Jordan Lyles (9-11) hit 7, walked 1 and hit 1 with only 3 singles allowed in 7 innings.
The night after winning 15-1 in the four-game series opener, the Astros didn’t even score Carlos Correa’s RBI single on Josh Sborz’s ninth off.
Greinke (11-6) allowed eight runs with five hits and three walks, pitching to the first six innings on the 16th. His last match was also a road loss with the Rangers on August 29, two days before a 37-year-old right-handed player was on the COVID-19 injury list.
Nathaniel Rowe preempted the Rangers with a two-run home run at a distance of 440 feet in the first inning. DJ Peters chased Greinke when he lined up a 421-foot 3-run shot on the Astros bullpen in the center left, making it 8-0 without an out for the sixth time.
Garcia hit a 438-foot drive for her first home run in 13 games and shot two batters’ eyes in the centerfield for a third 4-0 lead. The 28-year-old Cuba, who also added two doubles, was deeply away from the Astros relief on August 29, with Greinke’s final start.
Pete Inca Viglia hit 30 home runs during the 1986 rookie season. With 18 RBIs remaining, Garcia has 81 RBIs and 7 RBIs from the Rangers rookie record.
Greinke’s 28 home runs this season are comparable to his career height. He lost three times in a row, but this is the only time he has lost a series of outings at the 28th start of the season. Houston has lost six of the last seven starts overall.
Lyles abandoned nine runs in 10 1/3 innings in two other starts of the year with Houston, the team that started his big league career in 2011-13. Right-handed pitched seven or more scoreless innings, the fourth in 179 career starts.
Astros: RHP Jake Odorizzi was put on the injured list for 10 days with a pain in his right leg after being injured by covering first base in the second base of the series opener on Monday night. Greinke took the place of the roster. … LF Michael Brantley was one of the AL leaders with a batting average of .315 and missed three games in a row due to discomfort in his right knee. Dusty Baker has shown that the earliest Brantley could return as DH on Friday.
Rangers: 3B Brock Holt and RHP Drew Anderson have been activated from the COVID-19 injury list. RHP Nick Snyder (right shoulder fatigue) and INF / OF Eli White (right elbow tension) have moved to IL from 10th to 60th to clear the spot on the 40 roster. … OF Willie Calhoun (left forearm) may return to the team soon on Wednesday. He has missed 67 games since late June.
Both starters scheduled for Wednesday will only be in the third match due to their long stay on the injured list. Astros RHP Jose Urkidi (6-3, 3.51 ERA) was absent from the Astros for two months due to discomfort in his right shoulder. RHP Kohei Arihara (2-3, 5.89) missed the Rangers 97 after surgery on his right shoulder to repair an aneurysm.
