A water plane and 900 firefighters worked on the flames that started late Monday.

So far, about 5,000 hectares (12,350 acres) of land have been burned down, according to the Var Provincial Office.

“The fire spread incredibly fast and incredibly strong,” Mark Etienne Lansade, the mayor of Kogolan, a town in the region, told BFM TV about so far. He added that 100 homes were attacked.

The Var Fire Department tweeted an image of the bright red sky in flames early on Tuesday.

Interior Minister Gerald Dalmanin said he would visit Gonfallon and send the necessary reinforcements.

Authorities urged people not to drive around the area, known for its beaches and coastal towns. They were also advised that President Emmanuel Macron avoid the axis between Bormes-les-Mimosa and Saint-Tropez during his summer vacation.

Elsewhere in the region, two wildfires struck by strong winds near Athens on Monday forced the village to evacuate.
