Police say four people were killed in a shooting at a hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Wednesday night. According to police, the gunman also killed himself with a gunshot wound.
Tulsa Police Department Captain Richard Meulenberg told CNN that several people were injured – he said fewer were injured and none were life-threatening.
The identity of the victim and his weapon was not disclosed.
The motive of the shooter is not immediately known.
According to the Tulsa Police Department, the shooting took place just before 5:00 p.m. local time on the campus of St. Francis Hospital. Police said police intervened at the scene within three minutes.
Tulsa Deputy Police Chief Eric Dalgleisch told a news briefing that the gunman was believed to be a black man aged between 35 and 40. Dalgleish said he was armed with a long gun and a pistol.
Dalgleish said officials met the suspect on the second floor of the hospital’s Natalie building.
“The officers who came heard gunshots in the building, which led them to the second floor,” he said.
Dalgleisch said both weapons were fired upon.
He said it was not immediately clear whether the gunman targeted anyone or whether the shooting was accidental.
Police later learned that the shooter may have planted a bomb at a residence in Muskogee, Oklahoma, Muskogee police said Wednesday night. CBS Tulsa branch KOTV quoted Muskogee police as saying that a search of the house by a group of bombers and no explosives were found.
The surrounding houses were either evacuated or residents were told to find shelter.
Muskogee is located about 50 miles southeast of Tulsa.
According to KOTV, Tulsa police asked the families and friends of the victims and survivors to go from the hospital campus to Memorial High School in the same neighborhood and wait at the shooting range to learn the fate of the people.
Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt issued a statement calling the shooting an “irrational act of violence and hatred,” saying “Sarah and I pray for the families of those who lost their lives and those who were injured.”
The White House said it had informed President Biden that the situation was being closely monitored and that the White House was in contact with state and local officials to offer support..
Jan Hodges, who works at the hospital campus, said he was in another building about 100 meters from the scene of the shooting.
He told KOTV: “I just knew something terrible was happening. I mean, the police officers ran into a building with shields and rifles, and I thought, ‘I’ve seen this many times in the news in other areas.’ It’s almost like I’ve seen it before. it was a repetition of something. I really couldn’t believe it was happening in the woods on my own, and I’m sick because I know the people who work in Natalie’s Building, and I’m afraid for them, and I don’t know anything about their well-being right now. “
Hodges said he was under siege for less than two hours.
