No. 22 Texas rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Iowa State 24-21

Austin, Texas (AP) — Texas believes they are a tougher, more resilient team than they were last season — the Longhorns have shown it so far this fall.

The latest evidence came Saturday as No. 22 Texas, who overtook struggling Iowa State in the fourth quarter, came together to win 24-21.

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers, 3, and wide receiver Xavier Worthy, 8, played against Iowa State University during the second half of an NCAA college football game in Austin, Texas, Saturday, Oct. 15, 2022. Celebrating after connecting with a touchdown pass.

Quinn Ewers threw for three touchdowns, including a go-ahead 3-yard pass to Xavier Worthy with 4:43 remaining. Linebacker Jay Ranford produced his two turnovers, including a fumble his recovery with 2:28 remaining.

Bijan Robinson rushed for 135 over 100 yards in five straight games against the Big 12’s top defense.

The Longhorns (5-2, 3-1 Big 12) had a three-game losing streak against Iowa State, giving the Cyclones (3-4, 0-4) a fourth straight loss.

Texas was 5-7 a year ago. This is the first time Steve his Sarkisian has done it as a coach. Longhorns has been working hard not to let it happen this fall.

“This is completely different from last year,” Robinson said. “In my opinion, we would have lost the game last year.”

There were signs that Texas could lose this too. Iowa State moved to the Texas 32 with two receptions by stunning receiver Xavier Hutchinson. But Hutchinson also dropped Long on the Texas 9.

“I wasn’t good enough,” said Hutchinson. “What I see is that if I make that catch, I probably win the game.”

The Cyclones were still in position for a surprise win, but quarterback Hunter Deckers fumbled for 32. Anthony his Cook forced a fumble, Ford recovered, and officials conducted a video review to determine if Deckers’ knee was down. Target Texas.

Both reviews went the Longhorns way.

“When I see the ball come out, I have to go get it,” Ford said. “Call Cook. He hit the ball hard and went down.”

Iowa State, which has been struggling to score offensively this season, had a chance to take a 14-0 lead six minutes into the second quarter. However, Deckers’ pass was intercepted by Ford in the end zone.

The Longhorns then moved 80 yards to tie the game with a 15-yard pass from Ewers to Worthy. Less than six minutes later, Ewers connected with Jordan Whittington for a 5-yard touchdown.

Texas added a field goal in the third quarter but couldn’t keep Iowa State away. First, Deckers found sophomore Jaylin Noel down the middle for a 54-yard touchdown. This is his second time at the game. In his sophomore year, Deckers, his first-year starter, completed 25 of his 36 yards for his career-high 329 yards.

The Cyclones took a final lead, 21-17, on Deckers’ 11-yard run with 10:58 remaining.

“I’m very proud of him,” said coach Matt Campbell.

Texas responded to Deckers’ run by getting the go-ahead score, traveling 75 yards in 11 plays. Ewers connected with Robinson for 13 yards on 3 and 6 yards along the way.

“We didn’t play very well,” Sarkisian said. “But we played hard and we played tough. In general, it’s a sign of a pretty good team that can find a way to win even if they don’t play their best football. ”

Takeaway

Iowa: Ranked 104th in scoring offense, the Cyclones have fallen short of 18 consecutive possessions in their last three games. The streak was stopped in the third series against the Longhorns with a 5-yard pass from Deckers to Noel in the first quarter.

Texas: The Longhorns won the passing game. Ewers threw in just 172 last week against Oklahoma after he scored 294 passes and his four touchdowns. Ewers dropped his field down a pass by Casey Cain wide open in the third quarter where he could have lost a 58-yard touchdown. But Texas showed resilience to come back and win.

clutch efficiency

The reason Iowa State had a chance to win was because they made 9 of 15 third-down plays, including a 20-yard pass from Deckers to Hutchinson, before Deckers fumbled. The Cyclones also converted a 4-down play from Deckers to Hutchinson on a drive.

poll meaning

The Longhorns moved up from no vote to No. 22 after last week’s 49-0 victory over Oklahoma. It is quite possible that they will not lose their position.
