Oakland, California. – Former US Senator Barbara Boxer was assaulted and robbed in Oakland, California on Monday, her son said.
The attack took place near Jack London Square, according to a boxer-verified tweet. Twitter account.
“The perpetrator pushed her back, stole her cell phone and jumped into the waiting car,” the tweet said. “I am grateful that she was not seriously injured.”
The tweet was confirmed by email by boxer’s son, lawyer Douglas Boxer.
In response to media inquiries, Auckland police confirmed the robbery in the area at around 1:15 pm, but did not identify the victim.
Police said the suspect ran away in a waiting car. The robbery is under investigation.
Boxer, 80, represented California in the US Senate from 1993 to 2017. The Democratic Party did not seek reelection in 2016.
