DETROIT – Ford Motor plans to add four new electric vehicles to its Lincoln range by 2026, reinventing the once-dominant American luxury brand to focus on EVs.

The new vehicles were announced Wednesday night along with the unveiling of a new EV concept called the Lincoln Star. The concept marks new lines of design and technology for the brand, according to company executives.

“As Lincoln enters the next chapter in its transition to a zero-emission future, the Lincoln Star Concept will pave the way for our fully electric vehicle portfolio,” Lincoln President Joy Falotico said in a statement. “This is a great example of how we are redefining luxury for the next generation as we work to turn the vehicle into a third space, a true sanctuary for our customers.”

The Lincoln Star is a crossover SUV with a sleek exterior design and panoramic windows. Much of the vehicle’s hallmark is in the lights rather than the usual physical logos. Its silhouette is reminiscent of a Land Rover Range Rover SUV.

The vehicle on the inside is particularly different from Lincoln’s current range of vehicles, which includes a large Navigator SUV and several U.S. crossovers.

The Star, like many of its competitors ’new luxury vehicles, has a large display on the instrument panel and a retractable steering wheel. The front two seats of the vehicle can be rotated to accommodate the rear seats, providing a living room-like setting.

The star also has three “rejuvenating moods” that also change the car’s cabin audio, lighting and smell. Moods are Coastal Morning, Mindful Vitality and Evening Chill.

Automakers use conventional concept vehicles to measure customer interest or to show the future direction of a vehicle or brand. Vehicles are not for sale to consumers.

The new Lincoln EVs can give the brand a much-needed boost. Lincoln expects more than half of its global volume by half a decade and 90% of North American sales by 2030.

“Now is our moment,” Falotico told the media. “This is just the beginning of our electric journey.”

Lincoln has not been able to gain much traction in the U.S. in recent years outside of its large Navigator SUV. The brand’s sales were approximately 112,000 units recently in 2019. Among supply chain problems, its sales fell to about 87,000 vehicles last year.

Lincoln has had some success in China, however, leading the brand to one of the best global retail sales in 21 years last year. The brand’s retail sales were less than 190,000 vehicles, up about 7% from 2020.
