An imaginative and strong drummer, he apparently played a grateful role behind Foos singer-guitarist Dave Grohl, one of the greatest drummers in the history of rock history, Foos.

Hawkins filled that role with aplomb, bringing his tough style and time juggling to the band’s straight rock sound without trying to emulate Grohl.

He was also a powerful singer and often took up the mic at band concerts and B-sides, often on cover versions (e.g. in 2008 with Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones when Grohl went after drums. At Hawkins picked up the mic).

He also wrote many of the band’s songs.

Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Oliver Taylor Hawkins worked as a drummer for Alanis Morissette and Sass Jordan before joining the Foo Fighters in 1997.

His career continued to strengthen and in 2005 he was named Best Rock Drummer by Rhythm Magazine.

Taylor then joined the band after singer Dave Grohl clashed with drummer William Goldsmith. Goldsmith then left the team.

Grohl was also a former Nirvana drummer and ended up re-recording the band’s record with Goldsmith, a piece of drums played by Grohl himself, before turning to an acquaintance to seek advice from a new drummer, who proposed to Taylor.

Grohl believed that Taylor did not want to leave Morissette’s touring band, but Taylor decided to join the band because he had long wanted to be a drummer for a rock band.

Taylor also provided vocals, guitar and piano for the band on several recordings.
