Feeding a large household is becoming more expensive to provide at home and even more so to eat out.
In 2022, the US Department of Agriculture predicts that food spending will increase between 2% and 3%, and eating out will increase between 4% and 5%.

Eric Cooper of SA Food Bank says all these costs lead to more people in need.
“This means that families leave the grocery store with less food in the grocery cart, spending the same amount of money. And to make up for the difference, they come to the food bank for help, “Cooper said.
Cooper said some people are turning to cheaper foods that fill their stomachs instead of nutritious foods, which can affect their health in the long run.
Robbie Rodgers, chef and kitchen manager for Corazon Ministries at Travis Parch Church, is responsible for feeding more than 120 people a day on a limited budget. In addition to buying food from SA Food Bank, he also buys to get better deals.
“For me, as a wholesaler, I have to decide whether I want to pay a few cents less or carry more boxes with me and make more trips,” Rodgers said.
His menu should also be creative based on what he can afford. He says families can start redirecting some leftovers.
“We save leftover onions, carrots for stock,” he said. “We take fruits that we can’t use and keep them. We spread it with sugar to macerate, then preserve it for a while and after we are full we turn it into a pie or tart. And that also helps. “
Sometimes he says that the milk that is about to run out turns into yogurt. He has many other tricks and welcomes anyone who wants to learn how to expand their food budget and imagination to cook to volunteer at Corazon Ministries Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Cooper offers the following suggestions:
Go shopping at a traditional grocery store and plan a weekly meal to know which items to pick up, and take the time to continue cooking.
Shop outside the brand.
Try frozen or canned fruits and vegetables for a longer shelf life.
Anyone who needs food can contact SA Food Bank. There are several distribution events scheduled for this weekend and each week listed on their website. Click the Food Help button and enter your zip code.
