The FBI warned that cybercriminals would target the Olympics this summer, but a new study by Zscaler reveals that fake streaming services are actually the biggest threat to the Tokyo Olympics. I did.
Streaming of sporting events online has increased significantly since the 2016 Rio Olympics, as did the recent Tokyo Olympics.
During this year’s game, Zscaler’s ThreatLabz observed multiple instances of a suspicious streaming service that wasn’t associated with any of the official Olympic streaming providers. Instead, these websites claimed to offer free access to watch games online before asking customers for payment credentials.
After users registered access to these illegal streaming sites, they were directed to a fake payment portal used to collect credit card numbers and other payment information.
Resurrection of adware and Olympic Destroyer
Zscaler also observed Olympic-themed adware activity during the Tokyo Olympics, which claims to offer free streaming services. However, the user was instead redirected to an unrelated site for online gambling, automated trading, and other topics.
According to a new blog post from Zscaler, users have also been redirected to install adware in the form of browser extensions or fake software updaters. One example is the YourStreamSearch browser extension. This is a known browser hijacker who recommends ads based on the user’s search history.
The advanced malware Olympic Destroyer, which first appeared online at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, was also observed in the wild this summer as cybercriminals brought it back to the latest Olympics. In essence, OlympicDestoryer is a worm that spreads using Windows network shares and drops multiple files on the victim’s machine trying to steal browser and system credentials.
To avoid the victims of these and other scams related to online streaming, Zscaler allows users to update their VPN services and devices, enable two-factor authentication (2FA), and verify email sources. However, we recommend avoiding unofficial app stores and backing up your most important documents. And media files.
