Facebook’s independent supervisory board said Thursday that it had accepted the company’s request to consider the company’s decision to suspend the account of former President Donald Trump.
U.S. social media giant has been accused of instigating a deadly rebellion by his supporters at the U.S. Capitol on January 6 as lawmakers formally proved Joe Biden’s victory. Later, he blocked Trump’s access to his Facebook and Instagram accounts.
When making the decision, the company said the suspension would be valid, in some cases indefinitely, until the end of Trump’s term on January 20.
The board said a five-member committee would consider the case within a few days and report the results to the entire board.
The majority of members must approve the decision before making it. The board of directors must make a decision within 90 days, and Facebook must act within that period. Board decisions are not binding.
Critics of Trump generally praised Facebook’s decision, but many world leaders and advocates of freedom of speech blamed it and claimed to have set a disturbing precedent for freedom of speech.
The “very confident” decision was correct
Facebook’s Global Affairs Chief Nick Clegg told Reuters that he was confident that the company had acted properly when he suspended Trump’s account.
“Looking at the circumstances in which we made that decision, looking at our existing policies, I am very confident that anyone who is rational will agree,” Craig said. ..
But Mr. Craig also said the board could consider a wider range of principles and policies that could influence that decision.
In addition to considering the decision to suspend Mr. Trump’s account, Mr. Craig said he requested the board to recommend when political leaders could or should ban the use of the company’s platform. It was.
Facebook created a watchdog after being criticized for managing problematic content. The panel consists of 20 members, including Nobel Peace Prize laureates, former Prime Ministers, legal experts and advocates.
Twitter, Trump’s favorite social media platform, has permanently suspended the former president.
