(Reuters) – Facebook has removed the network of accounts from the platform and targeted Vietnamese activists who are critical of the country’s government, a source from Facebook’s parent company Meta said Wednesday.

In July, the company deleted Vietnam’s Facebook group “E47” and tried to mobilize members to report disliked posts to Facebook and have them deleted.

The latest steps have been taken against another group, according to David Agranovich, head of Facebook’s global threat turmoil.

“What we saw was a network of Vietnamese accounts engaged in this kind of coordinated targeting for this kind of activists and others who publicly criticized the Vietnamese government,” Agranovich said. Told to.

The attacker used his Facebook account to send “hundreds or thousands of reports” to the target using Facebook’s built-in reporting tools, Agranovich said of the network. This is also explained in detail in a report released by Facebook on Wednesday.

“Many operators use fake accounts, use them as targets, and report the actual accounts of the targets as fake accounts,” he added.

According to Agranovich, some accounts openly offered the deletion of other Facebook accounts as a commercial service.

“They basically promote this kind of abusive reporting service in their real career,” he said.

Unlike its neighbor China, Facebook has about 70 million users and is not blocked in Vietnam, the leading e-commerce platform.

It has also become a major platform for political opposition, but Facebook and the government are in constant dispute over the removal of content that is considered “anti-national.”

Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which handles inquiries from foreign media to the government, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
