(Reuters) – Facebook is creating a product team working on the “Metaverse,” a digital world where people can move between different devices and communicate in a virtual environment, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Monday.
Group executive Andrew Bosworth said in a Facebook post that the team will be part of the company’s virtual reality organization.
“The Metaverse can be thought of as the embodied Internet that is not just about displaying content, but within it,” CEO Mark Zuckerberg told The Verge in an interview last week.
Facebook, the world’s largest social network, has invested heavily in virtual reality and augmented reality, developing hardware such as the Oculus VR headset, and working on AR glasses and wristband technology.
I also bought a number of VR game studios, including BigBox VR. The Information reported in March that it has about 10,000 employees working on virtual reality.
Zuckerberg said he thinks it makes sense to invest deeply to shape what he’s betting on when it comes to the next big computing platform.
“I think Metaverse will be the successor to the mobile internet. Creating this product group is the next step in our journey to build it,” he said in a Facebook post on Monday. ..
He told The Verge: “If this goes well, in the next five years or so … we’ll effectively move from people who see us primarily as social media companies to Metaverse companies.”
