Facebook creates a product team to work on the concept of “metaverse,” which involves creating a digital world where multiple people can live at the same time.

The Metaverse team will be part of Facebook’s virtual reality group, Reality Labs, executive Andrew Bozworth said in a Facebook post on Monday.

“Today, Portal and Oculus can teleport to a room with another person, or to a new virtual world or experience, regardless of physical distance,” Bozworth wrote. “But to achieve the full vision of the Metaverse, we also need to build connective tissue between these spaces, which removes the limitations of physics and moves from one room at home to the next.”

Vishal Shah, the executive responsible for Instagram products, is one of the people who are joining Facebook’s new Metaverse group.

Technology companies and executives are increasingly discussing building the “Metaverse” as the successor to smartphones and the mobile Internet. Engineers generally think of the Metaverse as a virtual world where many people can come together for play, work, and socializing.

In addition to Facebook, Metaverse is closely associated with virtual reality and augmented reality technologies currently being developed by Apple, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft. Roblox, a game for children whose parent company is worth more than $ 44 billion, is often seen as an example of the Metaverse.

Facebook has a large investment in AR and VR technologies. This is because Apple and Google may be able to control their own hardware platform in the event of a final takeoff, rather than being controlled by the rules they put in the app store.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in an interview with The Verge released last week that the company’s own Metaverse will work on virtual reality headsets, mobile devices and game consoles.

“And hopefully, in the next five years or so, in the next chapter of our company, we’ll be able to effectively move from those who see us primarily as social media companies to the Metaverse. “.
