McNeill High Sr. Wins Women’s Flag Football Scholarship

Austin (KXAN) flag football one of the fastest growing sports In the United States.

Several universities across the country even offer scholarships to women’s flag football teams.

In Austin, one girl made history as the first female flag football player to attend the signing ceremony.

McNeil High School’s Trinity Hutchins recently put pen to paper and signed a letter of intent to play at Life College in Marietta, Georgia, this fall.

“Experiencing this is the best feeling ever,” she said.

Although flag football is not a sport at McNeil High School, Hutchins received an invitation to celebrate signing day with other Maverick athletes.

Her mother, Katrina Hutchins, said the special moment was years in the making.

“Trinity turned on 100% when they realized they could play in college and go to the next level,” Hutchins said. “She was a beast from the beginning. She played with the boys, competed with them, and excelled against them.”

Since the age of seven, Trinity has pursued her passion for the sport of football.

“Ever since I stepped into that field, I fell in love,” she said.

For the past few years, the 17-year-old texas fury — an all-girl travel team based in Austin.

Jason Crumb is the director of the organization, which has a variety of flag football teams for girls ages 10-18.

He also attended Hutchins’ signing ceremony at McNeil High School.

“This is a great opportunity for the rest of Texas to see that not only is flag football the sport of the future, but they can also receive college scholarships,” Crumb said.

Hutchins wants to inspire girls as they prepare to become college athletes.

“I was one of the first women to actually play flag football in college. I hope little girls look up to me and want to play this sport. I will continue to improve over time,” she concludes.

Hutchins’ travel team went to Las Vegas, NFL Flag Championship at a Pro Bowl game.

Her 17U Texas Furry team competed against the nation’s top women’s flag football team to finish third overall.
