Colombian striker Rafael Borré, who scored in the second half for Frankfurt, turned down a heavy penalty to secure the team’s first European goal since the 1980 UEFA Cup, a thing previously of the Europa League. The win marks a first appearance in next year’s Champions League for Frankfurt.

“It’s amazing,” Trapp said. “I’m trying to hold my breath. For us, for Frankfurt, for the country. For the whole of Germany I think it’s amazing. Being able to give our fans this way is something special. “

Trapp, a former Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper, made a save in the final minutes of freshman season by extending his leg to stop a close-range shot by Ryan Kent. The defensive guard used his left foot to cut off Aaron Ramsey’s penalty shootout, starting the big celebrations by Frankfurt’s “white wall” after the next goal.

There were also wild celebrations in Germany as Frankfurt fans filled the club’s stadium to watch a movie of the finale.

Joe Aribo gave Rangers the lead in the 57th minute and Borré scored 69th for Frankfurt, the third team to reach the Europa League after Chelsea in 2019 and Villarreal in 2021.

Ramsey, the midfielder between Arsenal and Juventus, entered the game in the final minutes of the new season to take part in the shooting. Christopher Lenz, Ajdin Hrustic, Daichi Kamada and Filip Kostic also changed penalties for Frankfurt, while James Tavernier, Steven Davis, Scott Airfield and Kemar Roofe got the net for the Rangers in the shootout.

“Those are the minimum limits when you can get to this level of competition,” Rangers captain Tavernier said. “It was in our hands but we conceded that goal and then Trapp made a good save from Ryan Kent.

Rangers coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst said Kent’s loss was all that different.

“You have to get that, especially in the last few minutes,” he said.

Rangers tried to win their first European title since the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1972. The Scottish team also lost to Zenit St. Louis. Petersburg in the 2008 UEFA Cup. He’s trying to pay back 10 years after being sent to lower divisions due to money laundering.

“It hurts to be taken away,” Rangers midfielder Davis said. “We know how hard it is to get back to this level.”

Frankfurt will return to the top of the European competition for the first time since 1960, when they lost the last European Cup to Real Madrid in Glasgow.

Most of the game culminated in a misunderstanding by Frankfurt’s Brazilian defender, Tuta, who fell while trying to chase a regular header. That allowed Aribo to run faster before he could open the scoring at Sevilla’s Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium by slowly sending a low shot past Trapp.

Tuta had to be replaced after he was injured in the incident. It was the first goal of the Aribo Europa League this season.
