A top European Union regulator has warned this social media giant Twitter will have to follow the bloc’s new rules for dealing with illegal and harmful content on the internet if it is to continue to operate there, signaling a potential challenge to Elon Musk’s plans to take a more seamless approach to content control.
Thierry Breton, EU Commissioner for the Internal Market, said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday that it was his job to ensure that companies, including Twitter, understood their obligations in Europe. This will soon include a series of new commitments to social media and other online platforms, called the Digital Services Act, after lawmakers agreed on key points in the legislation last week.
